2008 Group Submission - Frontier Collegiate
The students in these two pictures are from the classes that entered the
writing challenge. One class is grade 10 English while the other is Grade 12.
Not all of the students completed their short stories in time so we only had
twenty-three entries but I was still very pleased with their efforts.
These students come from all over Northern Manitoba and live at Frontier
Collegiate (my school). They do this because their home communities don't have
high schools of their own. Some of these communities include South Indian Lake,
Moose Lake, Brochet, Barrows, Crane River, and many more.
The students come from varied backgrounds meaning some come from privilege while
others are from families that are much worse off (gambling, alcoholism, abuse, etc.).
Some of these kids bring an incredible amount of baggage from their communities and
it is pretty remarkable how some of them manage to cope.
These students range in age from 16 to 23 and all were happy to participate in the
writing challenge. I (as well as them) look forward to taking part in it next
year as well.
Sincerely,
Matt Lind
